Sam Roberts wants to know.
Where have all the good people gone?
Almost everywhere I go these days I see ‘We’re hiring!’ and ‘Help Wanted’ Signs in windows and on billboards. Stories of delayed and canceled flights due to lack of staff. My kids’ school bus was cancelled multiple times last year due to school bus shortages. Restaurants closing early because they just don’t have any staff to keep them open.
During the pandemic people lost their businesses, lost their jobs, some found new jobs because they had no other choice, others quit because they realized there was a different way to do things, some because they needed to care for children while schools were closed.
It seems like there is a surplus of jobs and people don’t seem to be itching to apply.
So where did everyone go?
And as an employer, what can you do to find them, and even more importantly, keep them?
If you take a few minutes to reflect, is your organization a place where people want to work, want to stay, and be loyal to your company?
Because as we have learned, they will leave. And disappear into the abyss with everyone else.
When you help create an organization that people feel proud to work for and get them involved in the planning process, you will see sick days go down (minus covid symptoms of course! 😷) you will see staff turnover lessen, you will save money on training people just to have them leave, you will build a strong, solid team who show up for you and have each other’s backs.
In the book Leaders Eat Last, Simon Sinek tells a story of a company owner who treated all of his staff as his family, and believed that their families were his responsibility as well. He genuinely cared about them, and they knew it. When the company was faced with a crisis they pulled together and figured out a way to come out on the other side.
Now that is a solid team.
So how do you build a team that WANTS to show up in that way?
Get them involved in the process. Taking the time to ask your team what an ideal workplace looks like to them is one of the most effective ways to help people feel like valued members of the team.
Have you ever sat down with your people and asked what they want? What an ideal workplace looks like to them? Or you just figure you pay them so why can’t they just get to work and quit complaining already?
Remember, people tend to embrace what they create, so taking the opportunity to work with your team, get their input and have them come up with their own solutions is key for bringing the team together through collaboration, building strong connections and improving communication. Getting everyone involved in the process also takes pressure off the leadership team.
